Thank you so much for your kind Christmas gifts, cards and words - they are much appreciated. Wishing you all a peaceful and enjoyable holiday. If you have any family pictures of the holiday period, don't forget to send them to me by email and we will look at them when we get back to school in January.

On Thursday 13th December 3N visited the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens. We didn't go to see the animals but instead went to look at the many beautiful plants and trees that grow there. We visited the orchid house to see the smaller plants and looked at the roof and how this allows for sun, shade and fresh air to get to the plants. We then went to see a completely different type of plant environment - the cactus garden. The children noticed how this garden had lots of sun and little shade and also how the ground was sandy. Some of the cactus plants were very unusual looking. Then it was on to the monkey island to see the gibbons, but in particular to look at the 4 rainforest layers: 

forest floor, understory, canopy & emergent layers.

While we walked around we stopped to browse at the trees. We looked at the names of the trees in English and Vietnamese and also what they are used for: eg: medicine, furniture or fruit. Here are some pictures of us on our trip.

Christmas Biscuits

Jackson's mum kindly brought some Christmas-shaped biscuits in to decorate. Yesterday we enjoyed using icing and sprinkles to make our own Christmas biscuit in the shape of a stocking, present etc.

The children have been learning about fruits that grown in rainforests. We have designed our own fruit drink. We thought of a catchy name and made a colourful, eye-catching label for the bottle. Yesterday we cut the fruits and blended them with water, milk or condensed milk to make juices or smoothies. Some children enjoyed their drink at the class party yesterday.

Notices

On Wednesday 12^th December, Year 3 children will be visiting BIS Tu Xuong from 9am to 11:30am to watch a production of Jack and the Beanstalk. The school day will run as normal but please be aware that your child will be offsite with their teachers at this time.

 On Monday 10^th December, classes 3B and 3S will take part in a trip to the botanical gardens in District 1. Classes 3V, 3N and 3I will take part in the same trip on Thursday 13^th December. The trip will run in normal school time (8:30am to 11:30am approximately) and lunch will be unaffected. Children should wear school uniform and remember to bring their school hat and waterbottles.

The last day of Term 1 is Friday 14th December. School will finish at 11:30am on this day.

This week's P.E. lesson will now be a Swimming Session instead. Ms Claire would like one more session with the class to assess their swimming ability. So please make a note of these changes in your diary:

Friday 7th December - Swimming (swimsuit, towel & goggles)
Monday 10th December - P.E. (instead of normal Tuesday session)
Friday 14th December - NO P.E.

Looking tired after our Inter-house Athletics day on Monday 26th November.

In our Science topic on 'Rocks and Soils' we tested the permeability of different rocks. This is how close together the particles of the rock are, allowing water to get through. The children came up with some good ideas for testing the rocks but we finally went with using a pipette and squeezing water over them and timing what happened with a stopwatch. Most children found chalk, limestone and sandstone to be most permeable. Slate was one of the least permeable.

We have been learning about the native tribes people who live in the rainforests. There are around 50,000,000 native people living in rainforests around the world today. We leaned the reasons why they paint thier faces and bodies. We also discussed the types of things they would make the face paints out of: such as berries, fruits, leaves, flowers, plants and mud.

We used factory made face paints to recreate tribal faces. Come into class to see our individual pictures when they are put up later in the week.

Dear Parents,

Due to our class Christmas party we will miss our Tuesday P.E. session on the 11th December. Therefore, Ms Claire has kindly agreed to teach the P.E. session one day earlier on Monday 10th December. So please ensure your child has thier P.E. kit with them on this day. Thanks, Ms Andrea

Dear Parents,

Our class Christmas Party will be on the afternoon of Tuesday 11th December. As from today there will be a food sign up sheet on the door. Please sign up to bring in one small plate of food or drink from the list given. If it is cold food it may be brought in by your child in the morning. Hot food may be dropped off between 12 and 1pm.

I regret that due to space limitations, parents will not be invited to attend. However, if you wish to get some photos you can come in 10 minutes before pick up time at 2.20pm.
